Seven Easy Steps to Give the Perfect Gift

Giving gifts makes everyone feel warm and good inside. The giver of the gift feels good and the person getting the gift always feels good.

The hard part is selecting that gift. We stress over the price. We worry if the person will like or use our gift. We even worry if others will approve of the gift. Fear no longer. Use these seven steps to pick out a winner gift every time. There are a few ground rules before we start.

Do not stress over the price. Recipients of gifts don’t reflect back and say, “Wow. That gift was really cheap.” Research proves that recipients of gifts do not recall getting cheap gifts. They recall getting memorable gifts regardless of price.

Let’s get started!

1 Think About the Person and Make Notes

#

Write down everyone that you plan to buy a gift. Leave 3 line spaces beneath each name. Then write three activities that person likes. Then write something next to each of the likes that would be a possible gift.

2Plan Early

Make a plan to start early before the malls and even online stores get stocked out. I suggest taking a vacation day or “sick” day during the week to shop. Plan for early Dec.—not later than Dec. 10th. You will avoid crowds and shopping will be more pleasant. Of course, you can always shop online. Stick to well-trusted sites and stay on target. Don’t go “down the rabbit hole” and get distracted looking at furry kitten videos.

3 Set a Budget

Earlier I wrote about the price not being a big deal to the recipient. But price still matters. You want to spend only money you have. Avoid buying with credit cards. There’s no point to going in debt to buy gifts. Spending with wild abandon is irresponsible and you will regret it later.

4 Gift Cards

It is absolutely acceptable to give a gift card as a gift for the right person. For example, you cannot give your 7-year-old niece a gift card. She should get the actual toy. But you can give a gift card to your 14-year-old nephew to Game Stop. He will appreciate that you know he likes video games and he can select the game of his choice.

5Giving Cash is Cool

So often you hear, “Giving cash is so impersonal”. Cash is still king. Go ahead and feel free to give cash to anyone over the age 10. They will be thrilled to get it. BUT… do not give a check. Personal checks are a pain. Don’t make your loved-one go to the bank to cash a check. That’s just not cool.

6 It’s All in the Presentation

You MUST wrap the gift. Presentation is everything! Even a gift card or cash should be given with a card. Tearing apart the gift-wrapping is fun whether you are 7 or 70. Go ahead and splurge and buy some wrapping paper and create a big presentation.

7Give it in Person

Unless you live 400 miles away, be sure to give ALL your gifts if person. Don’t ask your brother or your mom to give the gifts because they will see that person first. Giving a gift is personal experience. Giving the gift in person lets the other person know you really care about them.
